Hidden archaeology
Cill Donnain and Bornais Machair, South Uist
On this walk you will discover the wide range of archaeological remains that lie hidden on the Uist machair. The walk will take you from Kildonan Museum along the machair to Bornais. On this walk you will learn about changing land use and settlement patterns from prehistory to modern crofting practices. You will discover a number of archaeological sites including the remains of a medieval church, blackhouses, an Iron Age broch, and several prehistoric and Norse settlement mounds.
A packed lunch will be provided by Kildonan Museum Café, included in the price,
Meeting point: Walk starts and ends at Kildonan Museum car park. Kildonan Museum is located on the A867 at Cill Donnain (Kildonan), approximately 5 miles north of Dalabrog (Daliburgh). Those using public transport should catch the W17 bus.
Terrain: Mainly established pathways, machair and beach walking. Walking boots and waterproofs recommended.
Cost: £30 p/person. Includes lunch. Children under 12 free. Friendly dogs welcome.
